Never put your home address or business title on a luggage label. Use your destination address instead. There are also luggage labels that keep personal information hidden inside a special flap.
If you are quite tall, try to book a window seat near the emergency exit. You will get much more legroom.
Since meal service on long flights usually starts in the rear of the plane, you are more likely to get the meal you want if you reserve a seat near the tail section.
People have used ginger for centuries as a therapy for motion sickness. There is actually some scientific validity to this old remedy. Those who swear by it say that ginger neutralizes stomach acid and toxins, while increasing digestive secretions and promoting healthy intestinal movement. Ginger root has a sharp taste - so you may prefer ginger capsules. Some people like candied ginger - but it contains quite a bit of sugar.
Pack a washcloth in your carryon. If dry cabin air starts to bother you, you can wet the cloth and place it over your face for a few minutes. The moist air will soothe your throat and nasal passages.
Always eat a small meal or snack before you board the plane. If you are stuck on the runway waiting for flight clearance or there are delays in meal service, you will be smiling while other passengers bemoan their growling stomachs.
You can over-pack your carryon with magazines and thrift-store pocketbooks to read on long flights. Leave them behind when you disembark. Not only will you have a lighter load to carry through the airport, but you will also delight the next passengers who discover the treasure trove you left for them.
IMPORTANT: Double check the destination tags on your luggage during check-in. 'ADD' will take your bags to Addis Ababa - not great if they should be labeled 'ADL' (Adelaide, Australia) or 'AED' (Aleneva, Alaska).
Many people confirm departures, but never think to do so with return flights. It does not take long - and could save you considerable inconvenience.
You should make sure that the airline has a telephone number where they can reach you in case of flight cancellation, lost luggage, personal items left on the aircraft, etc.
You should always pack gifts unwrapped so that security/customs can examine items if necessary. You can purchase gift-wrap, ribbons, and cards before you leave. Put them in your suitcase and wrap everything once your reach your destination.
If connecting flights are necessary, always allow at least two hours in between. This will permit you to cope with minor delays, and give you enough time to walk, run, or ride from one gate to another. Some airports are huge. Furthermore, airlines may not be too anxious to help you make alternate arrangements if they deem that a missed connection is your fault.
If you are lucky enough to book a flight with hot meal service, you may discover that your pat of butter is too cold to spread - no problem! Do not remove the foil from the top of your hot entree; instead, place the butter on the warm surface until it softens.
