When it happens to you it feels as if nothing could ever be as bad as breaking up. You had a relationship that was so special you couldn’t imagine being without it. But now it’s all gone and you’re left to grieve and wonder how things might have turned out differently.
It’s hard to get through times like these. For a while, you won’t believe you ever will. But there are things you can do and places you can turn which will start to ease the pain. Some of them have been there all along.
Your instinct will probably be to go off on your own and lick your wounds. But what you should be doing is surrounding yourself with your friends and family. They love you, they care about you and they know. They can see your pain and they feel desperate to help. You should let them.
Spend time with them. You don’t have to talk about anything that hurts too much. And they don’t have to be expert counselors. Just being together, doing normal things and enjoying friendship and company are enough to start making a difference.
So, although the last thing you feel like doing is going out, fight the impulse and force yourself. Whether it’s to a party, the movies, a bar or just a friend’s house, it will take you out of yourself, stop you from dwelling on your loss and remind you that you are loved and that you don’t have to be one half of a pair to enjoy life.
In time those feelings of pain, loss and resentment will give way to renewed strength and confidence, as you rediscover what you like about yourself and your life. And you never know, the new you just might make your ex realize the mistake he’s made in letting you go.
