The four-day state visit by Queen Elizabeth II, the most experienced diplomat in the world, has begun. It will, in all probability, be her last to Germany.

She’s here! Finally someone who brings colour to our republican grey!” the newspaper said. “Elizabeth II’s style corresponds to the philosophy of the Kingdom she rules: continuity instead of experiments.”The report went on to describe what it claimed were the contents of the Queen’s handbag – reading glasses and a make-up box given to her by the Duke of Edinburgh.

The queen, who turned 89 in April, has cut back on her public duties but still undertook 196 public engagements during the year. She's in Berlin on Wednesday, along with Prince Philip, at the start of a three-day state visit to Germany.
