Good lighting is one of the most crucial elements in any good interior design scheme. Lighting is such an important part of our lives but we tend to take it for granted and not realize how important it is. When homeowners decorate their homes, lighting is one of the things that’s most likely to be overlooked which is a shame since it can have such a large effect on the overall look of the home. Good lighting can create the illusion of more space. It can highlight interesting architectural elements in the home or artwork. It can make your home safer and more functional as well.

If you’re revisiting your home’s interior design, then it’s a good time to reconsider your lighting as well. Here are four lighting tips that you need to know.

Layer up the lighting

Lighting is about so much more than just illumination. The ambient lighting is all most homeowners think about. And while it’s important to have lamps and overhead lights to properly illuminate the space, there are other kinds of lighting to consider and the best home designs incorporate all of them. Natural lighting is extremely important and you can play with natural lighting by installing a skylight, using lighter window treatments, and strategically placing mirrors. Focal or accent lighting can be used to draw people’s attention to specific element’s in your home design and task lighting in the kitchen and other areas in your home can make those rooms more functional.

Less isn’t more

The phrase less is more applies to many things, but lighting isn’t one of them. Sure there are times where you may want less light but you can always turn some off or use dimmers to set the right atmosphere. But you need to have plenty of lighting to meet all your family’s needs.

Think about color

Many homeowners don’t realize that lights actually have a color to them. Even discounting the colored LED bulbs that you can control from your smartphone, just your everyday white bulbs can range from warmer off white colors to a cooler bluish light. Whichever you choose, make sure all the bulbs in a given space are the same color.

Carefully read the labels

You should look beyond the wattage when purchasing light bulbs. Read the labels more carefully and you’ll discover the color (light temperature of the bulb). Read even closer and you’ll find the manufacturing lot number. Bulbs manufactured in different lots may look slightly different when turned on and you want all your bulbs to match as closely as possible.
