You probably spend time in your kitchen every day, so decorating in there is very important. But in a room that gets messy so easily, it is important that your decorations don’t make the space feel cluttered. Instead of having a nice, clean, relaxing kitchen, you could end up feeling like you are sitting in chaos every time you use your kitchen. Here are some tips for decorating in your kitchen without feeling cluttered.

Keep things hidden away

If you have plenty of space in your cupboards, keep everything in them. For glass cabinets that you can see into, make sure you put your rarely-used China that looks pretty but doesn’t necessarily get used often. It will keep that space neat regardless of how neat everything else is. Don’t keep anything on the counter unless it is something you use every day like a toaster or a small, permanent decoration.

This includes making sure you don’t keep any food on your counter. A bread box or fruit bowl isn’t a big deal, but don’t leave cereal boxes or snacks on the counter where you can see them.

Get rid of things you don’t use

A lot of people don’t have room in their cupboards to hide everything away. This is a sure sign it is time to donate some of the things you don’t use often. If you don’t use it at least once a year, then it is time to get rid of it. If you own a bread maker but never make bread, it isn’t worth storing. This is a good rule of thumb for anything you might be storing around your house.

I always tell people to keep one box with memorabilia per person in your home, and the rest can be thrown away. Chances are, you won’t go through it if it is more than one box, and your kids won’t want to take more than one box of childhood memorabilia when they leave home anyway.

Decorate with your dishes and utensils

Another way to make some extra space while feeling less cluttered is to use your dishes and utensils in your decorating. For example, you could get a board with some hooks on it to hold your coffee mugs on the wall. It is a kitchen-themed decoration and can hold something you use on a regular basis.

Organize your space

Even with the most beautiful paint job, baseboard heater covers, and cabinets, your space will always feel cluttered if it isn’t organized. Do what you can to organize your space, so you don’t have to stress about it. You can get bins to organize different types of food in your fridge or pantry. Some people even organize in their pantry based on days of the week and the meals they have planned for those days. If you know where everything is, it will feel more organized, even if it isn’t.
