New home owner? Buy these tools

As a new homeowner, you probably are overwhelmed with how much work it is just to buy your house let alone take care of it. You’ll be spending much more time mowing lawns, cleaning bathrooms, fixing leaking drains than you could possibly imagine. But it is a lot easier to do if you have the tools on hand and ready when things start to break. Here are some tools every new homeowner should own.

Picture-hanging hardware

Outside work

How much work you will be doing outside will depend on whether or not you have a yard. For basic yard maintenance, you will need the following:

  • Ladder  for cleaning out rain gutters

  • Gloves for protection

  • Hose

  • Rake

  • Lawn Mower

Wall care/hanging pictures

A huge part of being a homeowner is decorating your first home to be a comfortable space. To do that, you’ll need to get all the painting supplies and baseboard heater covers. But you’ll also want to have some basic tools on hand including the following:

  • Drill & Drill bits for hanging stuff on the wall

  • Stud finder for making sure the things you hang won’t fall

  • Hammers for picture nails

  • Assorted Hardware including hanging supplies

  • Measuring tape for ensuring you can hang things the correct distance from each other

  • Level for making sure your wall items hang straight

  • Scraper/putty knife for repairing holes

Bathrooms

For your bathrooms, you’ll want hardware for fixing leaking plumbing problems and for issues with your drain. Here are the recommended items to keep around for repairs in the bathroom:

  • Crescent Wrench for tightening plumbing

  • Pliers for maneuvering plumbing

  • Plunger (1 per bathroom)

Putting together furniture

To ensure you are prepared and ready to put together all your furniture after moving in or later when you buy new furniture for the space or build your own furniture, make sure you have:

  • Screwdriver

  • Hex keys

  • Hacksaw

  • Utility Knife

  • Goggles for safety

  • Extension Cord for getting power to the right place

You can get most of these items in a basic toolkit from a hardware store, but you may need to buy some of the things separately. You’ll find there are a lot of things you need to buy for your home that you never had to have before. And while it can seem like a huge hassle to have to constantly take care of your own space and fix things on your own when they break instead of calling a maintenance person, you’ll also find it is really nice to have your own space. There is nothing better than coming home to a house you own and knowing you can do whatever you want there. Nobody can tell you how many pets to have, what color you can put on the walls, or even what kind of baseboard heater covers you can purchase. It is worth giving up a little bit of extra time to home maintenance to be in charge of your own space.
