Not everyone can afford to consult a professional interior decorator when decorating their home. Fortunately, many interior decorators are willing to share their tried-and-true tips. Here are five of them.

One room at a time

It’s easy to become overwhelmed if you’re thinking of your entire home as a single decorating project. For a couple of reasons, it’s a good idea to treat each room in your home as a separate project and do them one at a time. First of all, it makes decorating your home a lot more manageable to treat it as a number of smaller projects. Second, you don’t want every room in your home to follow the exact same design scheme. While there may be a few elements that tie all the rooms together, each room’s décor should stand on its own.

Use fresh flowers

Spring is a great time to incorporate some living things into your interior design. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to improve the look in your home. Just make sure to use real flowers.

Don’t purchase all at once

Many retailers try to make it easy for homeowners by putting out collections of home décor. While it’s convenient to make one trip to the store and purchase everything from a collection you like, there’s a big problem with this method. Interior decorators will tell you that while you want everything to go well with everything else, you don’t want everything in the room to match. For this reason, it’s best to purchase furniture, accessories, and other décor items over time and from a variety of places. Be patient and give yourself time to find the perfect pieces for your home.

Work with what you have

You can do a lot with what you already have and still completely transform the look. Sometimes the answer isn’t to purchase something new. Simply rearranging items you already have is enough. You can repurpose something old to make it new again. By the same logic, you should work with elements that came with the home rather than try to fight against it. If you have an old baseboard heater system, rather than pay a fortune to replace it (and the charm) you can install inexpensive baseboard heater covers to give it a new look.

Declutter

This last tip is free to do but not very fun. Simply decluttering your home can make a big difference and it counts as redecorating. You may need to donate or throw away some things or get creative with storage solutions to accomplish it.
