Despite being the most popular choice for residential roofs in America by far, asphalt shingles often get a bad reputation as being an inferior roofing product and cheap in the negative sense of the word. While it’s true that asphalt shingles are on the lower end when it comes to life expectancy (they typically last around 15 to 20 years) there are many advantages to them that make them a great option.

Inexpensive and easy to install. The number one reason asphalt shingles are popular is because they’re so cost effective. Not only are the materials used to make them inexpensive, they are much easier to install than most other roof types which makes them cost less for installation as well.

Wide variety of designs. Certain roofing materials like clay tiles, are normally associated with Spanish architecture because they have a certain look that complements it. The great thing about asphalt shingles is that they can complement any home. That’s because they come in a wide variety of colors and styles. Standard three tab shingles are the least expensive but architectural shingles can simulate the look of other roof types and typically last longer as well.

They last long enough. Though their shorter lifespan is often cited as a downside to asphalt shingles, the average homeowner will only live in a given home for 13 years so a single asphalt roof will usually last for that entire duration.

If you’re in need of  a new roof, you can consult a Spokane roofing company for a free estimate.
