What’s the worst that can happen if you ignore a tiny hole in your roof? Quite a few things, actually, and none of them are good. A tiny hole in your roof can lead to:

  •     A roof leak. No surprise here. If there’s a hole in your roof, water will find a way to get through no matter how small the hole.

  •     Widespread roof damage. Once water has an entry point, it will get beneath your shingles where it can cause more widespread damage and may eventually cause your entire roof to need to be replaced even if it is relatively new.

  •     Health issues. If moisture gets in your home, you can have some serious mold issues on your hand. Even if the mold is behind the walls or above the ceiling it can risk the health of you and your family members.

  •     Pest problems. Animals like squirrels, mice, raccoons, and even possums have been known to claw and bite their way through the tiniest of holes to make a home inside of yours. Once a spot opens up for them, however small, they have a way in.

Spotting roof damage

A hole in your roof may be quite obvious from the ground, but it isn’t always. Roof damage can be very slight and not visible to the human eye from the ground but still potentially catastrophic for your home. Here are a few tricks for spotting less obvious roof damage:

  •     Daylight in your attic. If you head up to your attic, and you can see daylight when you look up, you’ve got a hole in your roof. The problem is that this only allows you to see some of your roof and a hole in your roof that isn’t immediately over your attic space could still be the culprit.

  •     Water staining. Keep a close watch for any signs of water damage inside your home either on the walls, on the ceiling, or in the attic. Water stains will be slightly darker than the rest of the wall or ceiling.

  •     Get a free roof inspection. If it’s been awhile since you had your roof looked at by a professional, schedule an inspection with a Spokane roofing company. A licensed roofer will know exactly what to look for and can spot damage before it gets out of hand.
