The Costa Blanca towns of Javea, Denia, Moraira and Calpe
are often overlooked as holiday destinations for UK tourists. One of the most exclusive towns on Spain’s
coast is Moraira located about 25 miles north of Benidorm, sandwiched between
the resorts of Javea and Calpe.
This is the place to go to if you want a quiet beach holiday
without the crowds associated with some of Spain’s larger resorts, and there
are many holiday villas overlooking the town and sea.
The town is actually called Teulada-Moraira consisting of
Teulada which sits inland at the top of a hill and has many of the shops, banks
and offices, and Moraira which is the port and beach, but also has many shops,
banks, bars and the marina.
Moraira is perhaps the quietest of the Costa Blanca holiday resorts. It has a family beach with water-sports, and
a park just behind it, directly next to the town and the castle. It also boasts it’s very own secluded cove
called “El Portet” which can only be reached by going through Moraira.
There is only one time of the year that Moraira ever becomes
noisy, which is the famous annual Moors and Christians fiesta. The celebration lasts for about a week and
includes a parade by the local people dressed in spectacular costumes depicting
the conflict between the Moors and Christians in Spain. In recent years the event has culminated with
the “Moraira Music Festival” which is an open-air concert usually using the
flood-lit castle as a backdrop. The
performers are often taken from local children as well as professional singers
and musicians.
Many of these entertainers can be seen in various bars
around Moraira and are popular with both locals and holiday makers. Most of the music bars are grouped together
in an area called The Paichi Centre. There is usually a choice of different types of music as well as big
screen sports and pub quizzes on offer.
If you want to get out and about there are a number of car
rental firms with offices in Moraira. Car rental gives you the freedom to explore the Costa Blanca at your own
pace, and to see exactly what you want to see and not to be restricted to the
timetable set by your holiday company.
The quiet and exclusive atmosphere of Moraira makes it the
perfect escape from a busy lifestyle.
